Cooperation between Ukraine and Türkiye in the cultural and humanitarian sphere
16 June 2023 12:35

Cooperation between Ukraine and Türkiye in the cultural and humanitarian sphere is governed by the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Culture, signed on November 27, 1996, and the Program of Cooperation between the two governments, dated December 22, 2011.

In recent years, cultural cooperation between Ukraine and Türkiye has flourished not only at the official level but also through cultural and artistic institutions and direct contacts. Ukraine is represented in Türkiye across various art forms, including cinema, animation, fine and decorative arts, sculpture, folk and modern dance, culinary arts, and more. The focus is not only on promoting Ukrainian cultural heritage and traditions but also on introducing the Turkish public to contemporary Ukrainian art.

Given the current realities of the war in Ukraine, the embassy places special emphasis on maintaining positive momentum in cultural cooperation and actively engages in charitable events.

In 2023, the Embassy conducted active outreach and public diplomacy activities aimed at conveying objective information about Russia's invasion of Ukraine and ensuring a positive image of our country in Turkey.

To mark the anniversary of the beginning of the full-scale war and occupation of Crimea, in memory of the war dead and victims of the devastating earthquake in Turkey, a joint prayer service of Muslims and Christians was held for the first time in Ankara. In addition, the Embassy, together with the Turkey-Ukraine Friendship Association, organised a dinner for 1200 people for the victims of the earthquake in Kahramanmaras during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

An important area of the Embassy's activity was charity events in support of Ukraine. Thus, on 28 September, the Embassy organised a charity event to support the reconstruction of the Izium hospital in Kharkiv region.

Much attention was paid to joint work with other European embassies in Turkey. The Embassy, together with the Embassies of Lithuania and Poland, with the support of the French Institute in Istanbul and Izmir, organised a screening of the documentary film "Mariupol-2" by Mantas Kvedaravičius. On 9 May, the Embassy joined the celebration of the Europe Day in Ankara, presenting traditional Ukrainian dishes at the reception. On 13 July, together with the German Embassy in Ankara, the Embassy organised a concert of Ukrainian singer and composer Hanna Hryniva.

The Embassy, together with the Ukrainian Union in Ankara, organised screenings of a number of Ukrainian films such as "Shchedryk", "Region of Heroes", documentaries within the "Culture vs War" project and the cartoon "Mavka. The Forest Song" in Ukrainian.

In addition to the events sponsored by the Embassy or held jointly with other embassies, during the reporting period, the Embassy also implemented all projects under the MFA's 2023 action plan. One of the largest of these projects was the Days of Ukrainian Culture in Turkey, during which in October-November, the First Theatre (Lviv) presented the play "Dzherela. The Maiden's Fate". Also, on 4-11 November, a charity exhibition "Horizons" was held in Ankara, featuring 60 paintings by 34 artists from different cities of Ukraine. The funds raised from the sale of the paintings will be used to pay scholarships for students from the frontline regions of Ukraine.

During the year, the Ambassador held a number of lectures for future diplomats at the leading universities of the host country - Bilkent (Ankara), Bahçeşehir (Istanbul), Haci Bayram Veli (Ankara), as well as in a number of research centres of the Republic of Turkey.

The Embassy continues to work on filling the "Ukrainian bookshelf" in the National Library at the Office of the President of the Republic of Turkey, and also provides books in Ukrainian for libraries of Ukrainian unions in Turkey on a regular basis. Also, this year, with the support of the International Organisation of Turkic Culture, the Embassy published and presented Shevchenko's Kobzar in Turkish.

Much attention was paid to expanding the presence of the Embassy in social networks, where information about events in Ukraine, bilateral relations, activities of the Embassy, community news, comments, videos, etc. were regularly published in Ukrainian, Turkish and English. The Embassy supported the launch of a YouTube channel in Turkish by journalist Gulsum Halilova and the further work of the website "Mirror of Ukraine", which disseminates up-to-date information on the situation in Ukraine in Turkish and Ukrainian.

In close cooperation with the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar communities, events were held to commemorate memorable dates, including the Day of Remembrance of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes, the Day of Unity, and the Constitution Day.

On 25 November, a service for the victims of the Holodomor of 1932-33 was held at St. Mary's Church at the Vatican Embassy in Turkey on the initiative of the Embassy and with the participation of the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar communities, and a temporary exhibition "Unconvicted Genocide of Ukrainians" about the past and present of Ukraine, prepared by the Holodomor Museum, was opened.
